Elizabeth Hoak-Doering

I've been meaning to share with you this artist sooner as she is simply amazing, so better late then never. A few weeks ago we had the artist Elizabeth Hoak-Doering as a guest lecturer and she talked about her past work and her art making practice. She was the doing a residency here at our uni and we were special enough to have she gave us a talk. She is an international artist, currently living and working in Cyprus where she studies sculpture and archaeology. Drawing in from her experiences, her works in mutliple formats: drawing, multimedia, sonic and kinetic installation as well as published academic papers.

Her project titled "Things, Witnesses!” really impressed me and and has made huge impact to the drawing side of some of my majors this semester. Interested in the idea of historical embedment in objects, she suspended old furniture pieces from the ceiling and allowed them to create the drawings for her.It is simply amazing and really inspired me towards making one of my major works this semester. Be sure to check her out :)

Christian Ruhm

Hey lovelies! I'm sorry I haven't been here for the last couple of weeks as I have been overstocked with uni work lately. I'm sure we've all been there many a times so yea I hope I wasn't missed too much and in return I want to share with you a fantastic series of photographs from Belin based photographer, Christian Ruhm.

I have kind of fallen in love with his ongoing series titled 'Landmarks'. He started taking these multiple exposure photographs of famous landmarks around the world in late 2009. I really like these photographs because when I did some experiments a couple of years ago with multiple exposures it was really fun and I just really like the effect that it gives to an image. You can check out the rest of the series on his website and see if you can pick out all the famous buildings yourself.

Beinnale of Sydney: all our relations

If any of you live in or near Sydney then I would like to think that you have taken advantage of seeing these years Beinnale of Sydney. If you haven't or have no idea qhat I am talking about then listen up. The Beinnale is this hugearts event in Sydney that shows all these amazing artworks in these different venues. The theme surrounding this years was 'all our relations', which is about our relationship to the earth and also about making the works interactive with audiences.

My favourite venue that its held at is on Cockatoo Island, which use to be an old ship yard and prison. Not only did it have some of the best works there, it's also so amazing to wonder around the island and soak up its history. The photo's above are some photo's I took of a few of my favorite works. The one on the bottom left is by far my favourite, it was this like open room with all these wind chimes. It was just simply beautiful to sit there as I never realised how relaxing wind chimes can be. So if you have the time I definitely recommend to go and check it out for yourself. Below I put the links to the Beinnale website and to the artists pages.

Hello again everyone! I haven't even been back for a day and I am already posting on here twice. Even though I have been away from the blog I have still finding great sources of inspiration from photographers and artists. Recently I have discovered the LA photographer, Alexandra Bellissimo. She does these amazing conceptual surrealist collage works where she creates these half-human, half-nature people. Her works looks at the relationship between nature and the human body and how we feel towards it. I almost thought that they were paintings at first, but yeah aren't the ust simply beautiful. They are really create images that are beautifully shot with these great colour schemes and tones.

She has recently taken my interest as I am exploring a similar concept of people's relationship with nature. So she has been really interesting to look at as a source of inspiration for it. I'll be sure to share with you photo's of my works in progress hopefully soon. In the mean time be sure to check out Alexandra Bellissimo website and her blog as well.

Again I just wanted to say that I am really excited to be back to blogging and a huge thanks to everyone who has stuck around :)

DOC

I have a deep respect and love for all types of street art and artists. I don't know why I love it so much, but whenever I am walking the streets and I see a really great piece of work on a side of a building I wish that I could do something that amazing. For the past week I have been doing a lot of research on street art and have been discovering a lot of talent for my major essay that is due in next week. So I thought I would share one of the street artists that I found and that is Danny O'Connor, aka DOC.

What I love about his works is that even though their on the street their is so much expression and meaning in them. Also another great thing about him is that you can purchase some of his art that he has done on canvas to hang in your own home.

Antony Micallef

'The degenerate'
Oil on linen, 140cm x 140cm
'Hiena'
Oil and charcoal on linen, 140cm x 180cm
'Siren'
Oil on linen, 140cm x 140cm

I feel bad that I haven't shared any artworks on here for ages as I see my blog as a place to share all kinds of art. So I thought what better way to make a comeback by showing you the work of a artist I have recently discovered, Antony Micallef. The English artist first appeared in the art world about ten years ago and since has created works that are a gleeful attack on consumerism. The best way that I can describe my feeling towards his work is from a quote he made about his work, "My work is like watching a Disney movie which slowly turns into violent pornography". They are a perfect example of how something can be gruesome yet so beautiful at the same time. You can visit Micallef's website to view more of his work and find out about his current exhibition at the Rathbone Place in London.

Back from Market

I can't believe that I haven't shared these photo's with you guys yet. Well these were taken when I went to the Art & Design Market and couple of weekends ago. It was such a lovely day with the sun shinning and lots of people cramming in to wonder around and look at all the stalls. Unfortunately I didn't end up purchasing anything, but there were so many great things that I wish I could of gotten my hands on. I am already looking forward to the next market in November, which I'll probably purchase most of my Christmas gifts from.

I also just wanted to give a little shout out to Emma from Milk Thieves Art & Design who puts so much work into organising these markets. It is always such a great day out, so thank you Emma for all the hard work :)

Understand Still

'This is nowhere', oil on canvas, 54 x 66, 2008
'The Event', oil on canvas, 54 x 66", 2009
'I Wanna Love', oil on canvas, 66 x 54, inches 2011
'From Milan to Vienna', oil and acrylic on canvas, 66 x 54", 2006

I have kind of fallen in love with these paintings by artist Nick Lepard. He paints these intriguing self portraits and portraits of friends with these harsh brush strokes. This kind of 'quick' style is what I am looking at this semester in my painting class as we are also doing portraits. I still haven't decided on what I want to paint on yet, but I have in mind painting on wood which is really cool and exciting. Does anyone else have any new paintings/artworks/projects their about to start or stuck at the moment? Maybe we can inspire each other and get motivated to start them :)
